I make vocaloid music, and this is where I'll talk about it. I started a couple weeks ago and just finished my 3rd song. It hasn't been taking very long to produce them because I've been extremely hyperfixated on this and have been working both at work and at home. I recently got a drawing tablet to up the quality of my MVs too. I'm hoping this whole thing can serve as a fun little journey that I can look back on.
I was originally going to pirate Vocaloid 2 software (I love piracy & also you cant buy it anymore so...) but after my computer threw a fit I switched to Openutau and found a bunch of ports of V2 vocaloids for utau :) I decided early on I was mostly going to use Kagamine Rin, Momone Momo, and eventually Len and Miku's dark append. In the future I might also incorporate other Utaus for nostalgia's sake, like Nizimine Kakoi. The voicebanks I'm using are all Japanese because I can't figure out how to use the English ones, so I'm basically brute forcing them to sing in English. So far I think it's been working pretty well. It's important to me that my songs are understandable, hopefully even without lyrics on screen.
My first song was called "Ghost to You" and was brought on by the intense sadness I felt at an old friend pretty much ghosting me. The original concept and where the name comes from was that whenever I wasn't with them in person, it was like I didn't exist, as if I was a ghost to them. I also like ghost imagery and I liked how the name sounded kind of like "close to you". I wanted an Alice in Wonderland kind of motif. One of my favorite things that came out of the MV was the shot of the unread invitation on the table with the letter 'M' on it, because it could stand for the name of the friend in question, Miku, Momo, or Mad Hatter. I thought that was really cool.
The second song, "I LOVE MAKING MUSIC!!!!!!!!" I made from the intense and hyperactive feelings of discovering a new hyperfixation, which in this case was making music itself. Although one of the lyrics describes making MVs as kinda sucky, I actually had an incredibly fun time with that MV. I had found a proper video editing software and had become comfortable enough drawing Rin that it wasn't frustrating. In the song I depicted her as kind of a younger sister that I'm working together with to produce music. My favorite part of the song is the snack break in the middle where I supposedly take her to McDonalds. P.S., the eight exclamation marks in the title are a deliberate homestuck reference, lol
After this MV, I decided I was going to separate my internet persona into two more. 'Europa' is the one who produces the music, while 'io' is the one who does the art and videos. I did this because I thought it would be kinda funny and I wanted my art to be able to be seen without always having to be tied to my music. I'd really like to take commissions in the future and I feel like it would be easier this way.
My third song, Lazy Autumn Days, is my favorite so far. I focused a lot on the composition and I feel really proud of it. I wanted it to be a snapshot of the times I feel I'm currently enjoying -- spending a lot of time with my partner, admiring the fall landscape, always creating something. It ended up being mostly about my partner in the end, but I think I captured the vibe of how I've been feeling lately absolutely perfectly. I gave Momo a bit of a bigger part in this song and I'd like to do that more in the future.
As mentioned before, I recently got an art tablet! It's definitely going to take a while to get used to, as my only experience with digital art has been Colors 3D. It's extremely fun though and I really feel like I'm regaining my passion for drawing. Hopefully the art gallery on this site will be updated soon. I only want to put my absolute favorite pieces there, though.
I don't really know what I want my next song to be about yet, but I know I want to focus more on tuning, rhythm, and getting better with my drawing tablet.
